“We” Thinker Inspired to Help Others

Written by Owen Lockyer, a grade 4 student in St. Catharines, Ontario

Hello, my name is Owen Lockyer. I am 9 years old and in grade 4. I am really into hockey. I’m on the minor atom AA Jr. Falcons team in St. Catharines, Ontario.  I live with my little brother and sister, my mom and dad.

I first heard of Free The Children when I read the book “It Takes a Child“. Reading the book made me feel like I had to do something to help, so I had a charity garage sale with my family. At the garage sale, a lot of people came and it was really fun.  We raised over $350! It felt good to help other kids by donating that money to Free The Children because we can just go to the store and buy food but they have to beg for food. But if we try, we can stop that.

My family also sponsors a child in Guatemala. His name is Edgar and we visit him every year. I like to help him however I can.  For my birthday party I ask my friends for money instead of presents and I give the money to Edgar and his family to buy the things they need. So far, my brother and I have given over $1400 to Edgar’s family from our birthday parties! I also have a paper route and I give some of the money that I make from my job to Edgar.
I hope Edgar and other kids like him around the world can have a better life because I can be a good friend and I can share what I have with kids who don’t have as much as I do.
