Written by Libby Rees. My name is Libby Rees, and I am one of the young people who will be going to India this summer on the Free The Children and Virgin Atlantic Airways scholarship trip.
Recently, I have been involved in Free The Children’s We are Silent campaign, which encourages people like me to raise awareness for those whose voices are not heard, by taking a vow of silence for the day. Along with a group of friends, I took part in this campaign and didn’t communicate through speech or technology on 18 April, the day before Free The Children’s birthday. It was quite difficult, but thanks to lots of generous sponsors we managed to raise £148, as well as encourage others to find out more about Free The Children.
I am now focusing on the trip to India and want to get as many things ticked off the packing list as possible. So far I’ve got my jabs and have purchased some hiking and travel equipment that I know will come in handy. I think it’s really great that through both campaigns and volunteer trips awareness is being raised, and young people are being given the opportunity to speak out about global issues.
