Host an Event

Host an eventThank you for choosing Free The Children as the charity of choice for your event! Free The Children is thrilled to support you at any stage of the planning process. By hosting an event, your community can work hand-in-hand with a community in need to break the cycle of poverty.

Through hosting an event for Free The Children, the funds and awareness you raise will support Adopt a Village, our unique sustainable development model. By supporting any of our five essential pillars – education, clean water & sanitation, health, alternative income & livelihood, and agriculture & food security – your support will empower communities around the world to break the cycle of poverty.

Your gracious commitment to our cause is a powerful way to forge meaningful connections with your family, friends, workplace and community. And your event will raise funds that will help create change around the world.

Choose Your Event

There is no shortage of creative event themes to choose from – the only limit is your imagination! Here are some popular ideas to get you started:

  • Tournament events – Tournaments involve an entry fee and a day-long competition, such as walking or running a marathon, golf tournament, or another sporting event.
  • Sales events – Sales events involve bidding on items in a live or silent auction. This is often combined with a ticketed or tournament event to encourage increased donations.
  • Celebration events – Want to celebrate in sustainable style? Offer guests the opportunity to give donations in lieu of gifts for a birthday or anniversary event.
  • Ticketed events – Galas or concerts are a great way to bring your network together, while creating long-lasting change. Charge an entry-fee for an occasion and make the event memorable for your guests.

We are happy to provide you with our comprehensive event support package, which includes helpful information regarding planning your event, creating a workback schedule and budget, sponsorships and event promotion. Please see our Special Occasions page for more ideas.

Hear from a family who’s done it!

Bogani Family Coalition

The Bogani Family Coalition’s motto is ‘kuju kama wengi, kuondoka kama moja’, which is Swahili for ‘come as many, leave as one’. This group of families met on a trip to Me to We’s Bogani Cottages in Kenya in the summer of 2011. They didn’t know one another before going, and came back feeling like a family. The experience that these multi-generational families shared in Kenya, from construction work at the Kisaruni Girls Secondary School to connecting with community members, was so empowering that they have remained close since the trip. Members live as far as Vancouver, Saskatoon and New York, yet remain connected.

Since their return, they have held three fundraising events and are planning another for the fall. The first, called Jambo Jam, was a concert featuring the MCC Toronto Choir and a number of other incredible performers. Craig Kielburger was in attendance and the evening was a huge success, with members of the Bogani Family Coalition flying into Toronto from across Canada for the evening. The next was the Perogies for Good dinner and silent auction in Saskatoon, which raised awareness about Free The Children for youth and adults. Then again in May in Newmarket, the Free the Children golf tournament was a wonderful day with golfers coming out to support the All Boys Secondary School.

They have shown commitment and passion, and have devoted countless hours to raise awareness for Free The Children. They work tirelessly toward their goal of seeing an All Boys Secondary School in Kenya, to be modelled after the Kisaruni Girls Secondary School and the Oleleshwa Girls Secondary School. This group of warm, caring and welcoming people embody Free The Children’s core values and inspire their community to become engaged, educated and empowered to change the world!
