We Won’t Rest
Make an Impact on Homelessness
A place to call home—it’s everyone’s right. But millions in North America are homeless and their struggles are too often ignored.
That’s why we won’t rest.
Join Free The Children’s network of more than one million youth standing together to raise awareness and take action on important issues like homelessness and poverty.
- Each year, nearly 1.6 million Americans use homeless shelters.
- On any given day, 633,782 Americans are homeless.
- 22 percent of sheltered homeless are under the age of 18.
- 58 percent of sheltered homeless are members of a minority group.
- Every year, the average family at the poverty line is spending $9,500 more than it earns just to get by.

Email your youth programming coordinator at firstname.lastname@example.org to get started with your group. We’ll provide you with the resources to uncover the realities of homelessness and find out what you can do to make an impact in your community.
Step 1: Educate yourself
It starts with you! The first step in the campaign is to educate yourself on the many faces of homelessness and learn about the causes and results of local poverty.
The We Won’t Rest Fact Book contains statistics and resources for moving past stereotypes of homelessness and shedding light on the realities of the issue.
Step 2: Educate others
Not many people know that every year, over 350,000 children sleep in homeless shelters. Many of these children’s parents have jobs but can’t earn enough to afford housing. They are called the “hidden homeless.”
The We Won’t Rest campaign provides the opportunity for your group to talk to others about homelessness to raise awareness and dispel myths about the issue. Consider getting the word out to local media outlets to further promote your group’s campaign, or jump on social media to share your findings with friends and family.
Your campaign can culminate in an awareness event that brings your school together to talk about poverty in your community.
Step 3: Take action
Discover what homelessness looks like locally by taking action in your community. Volunteer at a shelter in your neighbourhood or hold a toy drive for a homeless aid organization that supports children. There’s lots of ways to make an impact!
Guidance and Support
If you need help at any stage in your campaign, don’t hesitate to email email@example.com for support and encouragement.
We also recommend you contact your local homeless aid organization for resources and advice on the most effective and appropriate ways to take action. To find your local organization, visit www.shelterlistings.org/find_shelter.html.
