family

When families come together to support their communities and those overseas, the possibilities are endless. Make social change a family tradition and watch your world transform.

caring spans all generations.

Families aren't just the people who take care of each other. As parents and grandparents, you are also the greatest mentors and teachers in your children's life, either by the questions you ask, the answers you give or the way you model by example. But you have a bigger family than you may realize. A global one. And they, too, may be some of greatest teachers for your family.

Share your passion for social change with your family.

Free The Children offers unique campaigns for youth to become leaders in social change. These two are particularly fun for the whole family!

Halloween
This Halloween, collect canned food for your local food bank when you go trick-or-treating with the kids. If you're home handing out treats, keep canned foods handy for others who may be joining in on the hunger campaign. Read more in the youth section here >

Birthday
Celebrate your child's birthday this year with a 30-day fundraising campaign leading up to the party! Ask guests to bring a donation instead of gifts. Read more in the youth section here >

latest tips and ideas.

Teach your kids that Gift + Passion = Better World. Show them how to pair their enthusiasms with their talents, then help them find a way to begin. Here's the latest idea to get them started.

SHOW AND SELL:
Create and sell one-of-a-kind projects like calendars, t-shirts, jewellery or recipe books. Donate profits to a local shelter.

Get down to business
GET DOWN TO BUSINESS: Organize a used-book sale. Or offer to be "official photographer" at a family event.

a family column in canadian living

Learn about the connections between North American families and those overseas in Craig and Marc Kielburger's monthly family column in Canadian Living magazine.

How to handle sibling rivalry: A guide for parents.

The most commmon question we get has nothing to do with our work as activists - it has to do with our work as brothers.

When people think sibling, they think rivalry. Then they hear how we co-founded Free The Children when we were young or how we co-authored three books. A few have seen us working together on our development projects. More have seen us sharing the stage for a speech.

All of them instantly want to know how we get along. If you ask us, we'll tell you about the importance of family, our mutual respect and how we never fight.

If our Mom is in earshot, she'll tell you a different story.
