Nearly half the world’s population (2.8 billion people) lives on less than $2 per day, making it very difficult for those families to be able to afford to send their children to school. In many areas, women’s’ skills and potential continue to be ignored and kids often have to subsidize the family income by working themselves.
Your participation in the alternative income campaign empowers mothers living in poverty to support their families. This kind of support helps break the cycle of poverty because women who earn a good living can send their children to school instead of work.
The exact alternative income project you support depends on the country you choose to fundraise for. Free The Children bases our alternative income projects on each community’s specific values and needs. For example, in China, we mostly supply pigs and farming equipment, but in Sri Lanka, we run a micro-credit and business training program.
When you sign up for the alternative income campaign, we send you a wall-size campaign poster and a step-by-step guide. You also receive one-on-one support from your youth programming coordinator.
