Fair Trade, Fair Wages, Fair to the Environment? World Economics in 2008

Welcome change-makers to the May edition of the Voices International Newsletter!

To mark International Workers’ Day on May 1 and World Fair Trade Day on May 12, this month’s newsletter is dedicated to economic development in the developing world.

The growth of large cities in Asia and Africa can sometimes be taken to signify the economic progress of the developing world. As with many things, however, economic development is rarely simple and often brings many challenges along with opportunities.

For instance, opportunities are frequently unevenly distributed and rural areas are typically left behind, resulting in a large gap in the wellbeing between rural and urban areas. Also, with growing economies we have to be especially wary about poor labour practices, such as unfair wages, sweatshops and child labour practices.

This May, join Free The Children in celebrating the month of the worker and the many important issues related to economic development around the world, such as those faced in rural communities from Kenya to China. Check out ways you can take action to make a difference, such as purchasing fair trade products and other small actions you can take to be a part of the solution.
