On January 12, 2010, an earthquake struck Haiti with the epicentre located about 25 kilometres from the capital city, Port-au-Prince. The 7.0 magnitude earthquake was the strongest the country has experienced in the past 200 years. Thousands of people have died, including many Canadians, and many more are homeless. The destruction of Haiti precipitated an outpouring of relief efforts around the world to help Haiti citizens during this terrible crisis. And, Markham is doing what it can to help. We’re confident immediate relief is well underway to provide essentials such as food, clothing, water and temporary shelter. But the work does not stop there. It’s now evident it will take as long as ten years and millions of dollars to reconstruct Haiti.
Canada has a long relationship history with Haiti, establishing diplomatic relations in 1954 and our peacekeepers have been involved in numerous missions during that time. Now the need is even greater and the Markham community has come together in solidarity, as we have so many times before to help those in need.
The Markham Miracle is a community-wide initiative that has brought cultures, organizations and business together for a common cause – to help with the reconstruction of Haiti. On February 1 we announced our immediate plans and our partnership with a great organization – Free The Children, to raise funds for Haiti’s reconstruction. Free The Children, a Canadian registered charity, will work with Markham to identify a reconstruction project with Haiti officials that will focus on youth – perhaps a school or other project to help Haiti’s youth grow, learn and prosper.
Your donations to this cause are deeply appreciated and 100% of all proceeds will go towards the Markham Miracle reconstruction project.
We also have three great fundraising events planned on February 7, 10 and in early March. To find out more about how you can participate click on the information link on this web page.
We extend our heartfelt thanks for your donation and help.
Please donate today. Together we can help build Haiti’s future!
