Throughout history, young people have always been at the forefront of every movement for social change. They make hope infectious. They have shameless idealism and an unstoppable drive. Free The Children was founded on the understanding that by awakening the spirit of leadership in young people, injustices can be stopped, communities transformed and hope ignited.

We’re all connected. No matter how small, our actions create a ripple effect that knows no end. When we move as one dynamic force, that ripple becomes a wave that can create dramatic changes across the globe. At Free The Children, we’re all about riding that wave to incredible places—thinking and acting with we in mind, instead of just me.

Everyone is entitled to basic human rights, but not everyone is in a position to assert them. Free The Children takes a “rights-based approach” to its work. We focus on battling exploitation and poverty so that those who traditionally lack social and economic power, such as children and women, can make decisions about their lives. Out of respect, not pity, we work hard to give back the dignity and freedom to those who have been denied it.

A community is filled with assets. It has skills, knowledge and passion that only need to be tapped. Our projects thrive on the understanding that people are active participants in their own development. They have the potential to forge their future and keep projects alive. It’s by using local power that change can be sustainable. Protecting the environment and tapping into indigenous knowledge are just some of the ways Free The Children projects use existing resources to keep a community happy, healthy and sustainable.
