Free The Children works to dismantle the idea of simple aid, and truly empower communities to success by making them equal partners in the development process. This philosophy is at work within all of our projects in Ecuador. Community-building is a well-known practice for many indigenous regions in the Andes, including San Miguel. Deeply rooted in their culture, the population of San Miguel has practiced community-building for centuries under the concept of “mingas.” A minga is a community event through which all members contribute for the benefit of the community as a whole.
The people of San Miguel have been actively involved in mingas in working with Free The Children to build a school. It is through this process that the entire community decided where the new school should be built so everyone in San Miguel could access it. Community members volunteered through mingas to help make the adobe bricks for the structure, carry the construction materials and lay the foundation for the school.
We help driven and passionate youth at home engage in social issues, and inspire them to make a contribution to the developing world.
Our holistic development model is built upon four pillars: education, health, alternative income, and water and sanitation.
Through the generous support of many partners, we’re able to offer unique youth programs, giving corporations the chance to become leaders in CSR.
